A Hell of a Journey

This year has been something.

I struggled through recovery from my throat cancer (still struggling), we opened our beautiful boutique hotel (now getting ready to close our beautiful boutique hotel) and we’ve been adapting to life here in Chiang Mai.

It’s been a year of incredible exhilarating highs and lows from beyond hell. This roller coaster of a ride we call life, could not be more represented by all of the events and days that we were subjected to this year alone.

There was much of the year that I was dedicated to an exorbitant amount of pain as I recovered. I ended up having to subdue that pain with liquid morphine that my body became addicted to and had to recover from as well. Still on other painkillers, but no longer addicted.

Even through the pain and opioid issues, I (we) still had to run our hotel and worked 7 days a week, 12 hour days…as we still do and will until we close on December 30th. As you can imagine, this little note is one of the many reasons we are closing. Although we love our hotel, the guests and our staff, it’s just been too much weight to carry from an emotional, physical and financial perspective.

But, on the high notes, I’ve been more creative than I may have ever been with my art. I’ve created a strong visual vocabulary that perfectly embodies my intent through paper sculpture and abstract watercolors. I’ve been busy on a few new series and the flow of creative juices continues to flood my studio. With Hilcia helping to manage me, we’re looking towards future shows and gallery exhibits.

We also adopted our beautiful baby girl, Lil’ Tomi Yum. This addition to our family has not only brought us both joy, but also helped me get through the pain, depression and struggle of cancer recovery. I’m not sure where I would mentally and emotionally be if she wasn’t in our lives. We cannot even imagine our lives without her now.

We look forward to moving to a new place just a few kilometers from where we are now in lovely Doi Saket. It’ll be our forever home with a pool, art studio and magnificent view of the hills and forest where we can both live our best creative lives.

So, as you can see, a hell of a journey, but for all of the struggles we stepped through this year, it’s really starting to look like our trek is close to ending just beautifully.
